- Have a green-themed breakfast: serve green pancakes, green smoothies, or green eggs and ham.
2. Decorate the house with DIY crafts: Make St. Patrick’s Day-themed decorations such as shamrock suncatchers a shamrock garland or a rainbow door wreath.
3. Try an Irish dance lesson: Learn some traditional Irish dances and perform them as a family. KC has local studios or you can even do it at home with an online video lesson!
4. Watch Irish movies: whether you are looking for a documentary or a fictional family favorite, watch a movie together that is based in Ireland and about Irish culture or festivities. You can choose an Irish-themed movie, like Darby O’Gill and the Little People, The Secret of Roan Inish, or The Quiet Man. One of our familyโs favorites is Disneyโs The Luck of The Irish!
5. Make Irish-themed treats: Places like Taste Budsโ Kitchen have great St. Patrickโs Day classes this year. You can learn to make rainbow cupcakes, rainbow donuts, or St. Patrickโs Day-themed cake pops. Theyโve got CLASSES and also CAMPS!
6. Make Irish Food: Ireland is famous for several dishes, including Irish Stew Pie, Irish Breakfasts, and Fish and Chips. An easier food to try and make is traditional Soda Bread. Of course, there are always green cupcakes, or a pot of gold cake, and the kiddos will love them!
7. Wear Green: Itโs no surprise that everyone will be wearing green for St. Patrickโs Day. Plan to match with your family or turn it into a contest and see who can wear the MOST green. Donโt forget that St. Pattyโs Day tattoos, green makeup, and green hair color count!
8. Visit a local Irish pub: Try some traditional Irish dishes and drinks, like corned beef and cabbage, and Irish stew. Check out our complete Guide to the Best Irish Pubs & Markets in KC.
9. Make Leprechaun Traps: Leprechauns love sweet treats. Let your child get creative and create a trap so they can get a little treat from a leprechaun (like chocolate coins or some green $$).
10. Make a Rainbow Trail to a Pot of Gold: Grab some yarn (colors of the rainbow) and start at one end of the house or backyard. After tying it in a starting place, stretch the yarn out, creating a trail for them to follow. Make it tricky and as long as possible, they will be happy to reach the end and find a pinata full of fun or maybe a basket of treats or gold.
11. Make Fruit Loop Rainbows: Grab a box of Fruit Loops, some marshmallows, and a piece of paper. Arrange the Fruit Loops into the shape of a rainbow and glue them to the paper. This craft is great for little fingers, enhancing those fine motor skills.
12. Go on a Scavenger Hunt: Create a scavenger hunt or find one online. If you are making your own, include fun things like โfind a gold coin, something green, four-leaf clover, etc..โ. This will be a fun activity to do inside or outside.
13. Head out to a St. Patrickโs Day Parade: There are tons of St. Patrickโs Day parades that are happening around Kansas City. We even created your complete guide to help you find one near you. Check out this master list of fun St. Patrickโs Day parades.
14. Pin the Gold on the Pot: Another fun family activity to celebrate St. Patrickโs Day is Pin the Gold in the Pot! Place a picture of a rainbow on the wall and cover your childโs eyes. Give them a few spins and have them try to place a gold sticker at the end of the rainbow. See who can get the closest to the pot.
15. Musical Shamrocks: Print out shamrocks or four-leaf clovers onto green construction paper. Lay them in a circle and play some Irish Folk Music. Make sure you are on one when the music stops!
16. Visit Ireland!: Visit Google Earth or online virtual tours and explore the lush landscapes of Ireland. Select guided tours to discover landmarks, forests, castles, and more. This also makes for a great educational experience too.
17. Go Green: Grow some Irish shamrock clover with the kiddos. Greenery not only looks great in your home, but it cleanses the air too.
18. Learn the History of St. Patrickโs Day: The history of St. Patrickโs Day is another great way to celebrate with the kids. Check out books or do research online on the history of this great celebration.
However you choose to celebrate St. Patrickโs Day, we hope you and your family make the most of it and make some forever memories with the kids!
