E3 Scholarship Fund in KC
E3 Scholarship Fund is a program born from a personal necessity, that is being used to now help other families. In addition to their assessment center, the E3 Sports Facility offers jit-jitsu, yoga & other fitness classes to get active & build confidence.
We recently interviewed Denise Tietgen, Founder and Executive Director of E3, to get the scoop on their program directly impacts Kansas City children and families. Take a look…
Q: Can you tell me a little bit about the E3 Program?
A: Our daughter was suicidal. Jiu-jitsu saved her life. The Kolbe helps make it meaningful and fun. We think jiu-jitsu is the best and most effective form of self-defense. If everyone understood their own Kolbe and knew how to interact according to everyone else’s Kolbe, Mondays would be a lot more enjoyable.
Q: How did you get started with the program? What is most meaningful for you about it?
A; We enrolled our daughter into an MMA program and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was one of the martial arts that resonated with everyone. As a mom, I want my kids to have a great time in a safe environment. Jiu-jitsu teaches you to escape and hold your opponent as opposed to hitting and kicking, less chance of brain injuries. I liked that. Kolbe made getting Claire to school easier with fewer fights. I loved that!
Q: Transitioning to your new initiative, the Kolbe Index Assessment, can you tell me more about that assessment and your goals for it with E3?
A: The three parts of the mind are cognitive (IQ), affective (feelings), and conative (instincts). The Kolbe measures HOW you naturally take action according to an instinctual, subconscious level. You may WANT to be a dentist and be SMART enough to be a dentist, but if you don’t have the manual dexterity and desire to work with your hands, you won’t be successful or happy. The four Kolbe Action Modes are Fact Finder | Follow Thru | Quick Start | Implementor.
The Kolbe Assessment tells you what’s RIGHT about you and how to make the most of it. Knowing your Kolbe allows you the freedom to unleash the limitless power of your natural instincts, improving performance and productivity at school and on the job, have a rewarding career, improve and enrich personal relationships, and become effective parents.
Our first Kolbe goal is to offer it to families to help improve their relationships and help their children have better experiences at school.
Our ultimate Kolbe goal is to bring Kolbe into classrooms nationwide. We want education in America to rival Sweden and Japan.
Q: How do you think the index assessment will directly impact children and families in the Kansas City area?
A: Happier life!
Imagine being encouraged and complimented on how you do things. Parents learn the natural way their children take action and how to nurture and tap into their unique method of operation. Students are empowered with the freedom to learn in ways that are most natural to them, encouraged to what they do best and rewarded and celebrated for their unique abilities. Imagine the relief on not being nagged at or judged for doing things your way!!!
It can also increase the likelihood of success in school and transform the way a family functions.

We asked Denise to share her personal story about why E3 is such an important mission for her. Her words are below…
” My daughter Claire (who has an invisible disability-Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) was at the point of taking her own life…at the age of 11! She was being bullied at school and had nowhere to turn. We found suicide notes in her diary and written in her closet and it was terrifying and heartbreaking. A friend suggested Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes as a way to make friends outside of her school circle. To our surprise and relief, it worked! We made a video to document her progress with the hopes that what worked for her might work for another kiddo who was feeling the same way: https://www.e3sf.org/claires-story/ (scroll down to the video)
Claire was still struggling at school. We had an IEP in place and wonderful adults who were trying to help support her education. She was frustrated and fed up. We met with Dr. Ramon Corrales, who had been coaching us with the suicide issue. He introduced us to the Kolbe Assessments. It made an immediate impact on Claire’s experience at school. Now she has the tools to advocate for herself in all situations.
Our entire family took the Kolbe and it made such an impact on our interpersonal expectations. Our son who recently graduated from SM East is one of the brightest people I know. He did not do well in school. From about 5th grade on we constantly heard “He’s not working to his full potential”. Charlie is a Researcher/Implementor which means he needs to get a lot of information first, then get hands-on with a project. Before, we had no idea what motivated him. We couldn’t get him off of his phone/computer long enough to try anything. He hated school, had no desire to go to college, and didn’t really know what he was going to do next. Now that we built and opened E3 Sports Facility, he gets up every day and teaches kids classes. He plans new curriculums and programs and we are all so happy that he’s found his “way”. Our youngest daughter, Abby, is finding her way through jiu-jitsu and the Kolbe too.
We want to share what we’ve found with the world! There are too many youth suicides happening. Families need a place to connect, have fun, play, compete, make friends, learn new things. E3 Sports Facility provides that with jiu-jitsu and kids fun & fitness classes. Parents are spending a ton of money looking for help with school. We have a member who has invested over $15k with Brain Balance (not dissing it, I don’t know anything about it) but it hasn’t worked for them. Jiu-jitsu is reaching her heart. The Kolbe is giving her parents tools to go into their IEP meetings with clearer directions on making her school environment less stressful. The Kolbe Y with a personal interpretation by a certified Kolbe Consultant is $80. And we provide ongoing support and offer continuing workshops. The Kolbe Y is for 4th-grade readers up to 17. Just before graduation, students can take the Kolbe A (adult) that is used by many Fortune 500 companies for ensuring they have the right person in the right place. We believe the Kolbe is the perfect tool for deciding what path of study they should be in.”
The Kolbe Index Assessment is a valuable resource for families to gain a better understanding of one another at home, at school, and on the go.
