For almost 200 years, the celebration of Juneteenth has been a day of celebration amongst many African American families as it commemorates the emancipation of slaves in the South. On June 19th, 1865, more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans were finally free by an executive order thus becoming known as Juneteenth.
As parents and caregivers, it is crucial to educate our children about the full spectrum of American history, including the triumphs and struggles of African Americans. By learning about and celebrating Juneteenth, families have a unique opportunity to impart crucial values of equality and freedom to the next generation.

Juneteenth Events in Kansas:
Juneteenth in Johnson County Square
Wednesday June 19th

This Juneteenth celebration will feature community speakers, historical readings,food, musical performances, kids activities and more.
Juneteenth Freedom Celebration Prairie Village
This freedom celebration will host a variety of Black Owned vendors, crafts, face painting, music, and more.
Saturday June 15th

7727 Delmar Prairie Village
This Annual Juneteenth celebration brings speakers and events to learn the importance of history and how we can learn from it. There will also be bounce houses, water slides, food trucks, face painting and more.
Juneteenth in the Dotte

This free community event will be full of local vendors, music, speakers, a parade, and more. Bring the family out to celebrate freedom and unity together.
Juneteenth Parade and Festival in Leavenworth
Saturday June 15th

S 7th St & Cherokee St, Leavenworth, KS
This free Juneteenth celebration will include live music, games, yummy food, a parade, and more. This event starts at 6:30 with the parade kicking off at 6:45. Remember to bring your lawn chairs to enjoy the festivities.

The BlaKCK MarQet, hosts a Juneteenth celebration in KCK.There will be music, youth activities, food and more.
Juneteenth at the Johnson County Arts and Heritage Center

This free Juneteenth festival will have special performances by Kansas City friends of Alvin Ailey, dance workshops, special presentations and samples from local Black owned businesses.

One of KCโs biggest Juneteenth celebrations is back with a parade and a huge family-friendly festival. This celebration will have musical performances, art exhibits,face painters, pony rides and more.
Juneteenth at The Nelson

Nelson Atkins Museum of Art
Even though this event is free, registration is required to attend. The museum will host a Juneteent celebration that showcases live music, dancing, storytelling, and more.

Visit the Library
The library has a variety of books, DVDs, and movies that celebrate black voices and host years of history. Check out books and more that share the history and culture of Juneteenth. The Mid Continent Public Library has a variety of Juneteenth events coming up. Find an activity at a branch near you.
Support Black Businesses
Kansas City has many, many black-owned businesses. Shop local and support small black-owned businesses around the metro.
Visit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum
Another way to celebrate Juneteenth is to visit the Negro League Museum. While the Negro Leagues happened many decades later, learning about the accomplishments of African American athletes is another great way to honor those that have overcome the challenges of slavery and segregation.
With Juneteenth, an official federal holiday, use this time off to learn and honor the past of enslaved African Americans as well as enjoy the accomplishments and culture.
