Other Movies to be Released On-Demand:
Universal has not announced exactly how many in-theater movies will be available on demand, but below is the list of movies we know about. Movies that were already in theaters will be available on-demand, as well as movies that were scheduled to be released in theaters later into March & April.
- Trolls World Tour
- The Hunt
- The Invisible Man
- Focus Featuresโ Emma
Currently, many major blockbuster films will not be included in the on-demand program, such as F9 (Fast & Furious). However, keep an eye out for updates at things are changing by the minute.
Why?
When it all was first announced, movie theaters dropped capacity (some to 50%) in order to reduce proximity to other movie-goers. They also increased their cleaning and sanitation procedures, but this was not enough for the public to continue to come to the movies.
So, the film industry has decided to make changes to the new release distribution process in order to accomadate families who wanted to see the upcoming movies, as well as people who are stuck at home…
Universal released a public statement to explain the change in how movies will be released due to the challenges of viewing films in theaters right now.
“Given the rapidly evolving and unprecedented changes to consumers’ daily lives during this difficult time, the company felt that now was the right time to provide this option in the home as well as in theaters. NBCUniversal will continue to evaluate the environment as conditions evolve and will determine the best distribution strategy in each market when the current unique situation changes.”
โUniversal Pictures has a broad and diverse range of movies with 2020 being no exception. Rather than delaying these films or releasing them into a challenged distribution landscape, we wanted to provide an option for people to view these titles in the home that is both accessible and affordable. We hope and believe that people will still go to the movies in theaters where available, but we understand that for people in different areas of the world that is increasingly becoming less possible.โ said NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell.
When Will the Movies be Available?
Starting Friday, March 20th you will be able to rent the above movies on-demand that were already in theaters.
Then, movies to-be-released later this month or in April, will be available on their original theater release date. For example, Trolls World Wide Tour will be available on it’s original release date, April 10th.
How Much Will Movies Cost?
Each movie will be available for $19.99 (suggested retail price). You will have access to the film for 48 hours, so you can watch it more than once…if your kiddos love Trolls as much as ours.
Where Can I Rent the Movies?
You will be able to rent the movies through on-demand platforms like Comcast On-Demand & Amazon Prime Video, so you can stream from your computer or watch it through cable providers.
