4 Silly Holidays to Share with Your Kids

Each day of the year it seems there is some sort of holiday but there are some especially fun holidays that can add something special to your week. Here are some of my favorite picks and ideas to go along with them.

National Tongue Twister Day

When: Nov. 8th 2017

This holiday seems to have a few dates ranging from November 8th –November 12th but either way it is a fun way to spend some time. All you have to do for this holiday is spout out some of your favorite tongue twisters. You and your kids can take turns, race or even make up your own.

Try these fun tongue twisters!

Ugly Sweater Day

When: December 19, 2017

December has a lot of great silly Holidays but this one stood out to me as a great photo opportunity. It’s time to run out and raid the thrift store for the ugliest sweaters you can find and take a cute family photo. You can play dress up and take lots of fun photos with your camera, visit a photo booth or even prep for holiday cards! You could even take your sweaters out on the town! Keep tabs on all the funny looks you get.

Check here for more goofy ideas!

National Squirrel Day

When: January 21, 2018

It’s time to celebrate those acorn eating critters. Little ones will enjoy learning about these guys, their habitats and other fun facts. As a family you can make feeders to set out for them and other critters. You can write a story together or make up a silly song or dance.

Learn the sign language for squirrel!

Ground Hog Day

When: February 2, 2018

This is a more familiar holiday but there are so many fun ways to celebrate it! You can read and learn about ground hogs or even more fun, you can make pop up puppets. Every year in Pennsylvania they have a great unveiling of Punxsutawney Phil at Gobblers Knob and they wait for him to see his shadow or not. You can watch the live broadcast and have your own watch party and make predictions. Later on in the day you can watch the movie Ground Hog Day directed by Harold Ramis in 1993.

These are just a few upcoming silly holidays. Stay tuned to iFamilyKC for more silly fun throughout the year!

How to Create an Easy & Fun Christmas Countdown

December has finally graced us with it’s presence. Christmas trees are getting decorated, lights are being hung, and family traditions are starting to play out. Our Mom Squad Ambassador, Becky, has an awesome tradition – an easy Christmas Countdown activity! What a fun way to add a little extra “special” to the holidays. Check it out!

How to Create an Easy & Fun Christmas Countdown

My favorite family holiday tradition is our countdown to Christmas box. This is our version of the chocolate advent calendars. I received this box from my mom when our oldest was still a toddler. It’s now my prized Christmas decoration not because of what it looks like on the outside but for what’s inside those little drawers—pure Christmas joy. Nope, it’s not sweets or prizes (neither of which we need more of this season), instead it’s full of family holiday activities.

You should do this! Wait, where are you going?

Before you get overwhelmed with the idea of trying to pull off 24 activities with your kids in as many days, let me lower your standards as what counts as an “activity.” Answer: Basically anything. And I guarantee you, your family probably already has half the calendar filled with December events anyway. Is Grandma taking them to The Nutcracker? Is your husband’s family getting together for pizza? Is everyone going to a cousin’s birthday party? Is your kids’ favorite babysitter coming over on Friday? Have I taught you nothing? Milk those things!

Still struggling? Here’s a list to get you going:

How to Create an Easy & Fun Christmas Countdown

Reeeeeeaaaaaally easy:

Watch a Christmas movie before bed

Make hot chocolate

Read The Night Before Christmas

Play a game after dinner

Have a bubble bath

Wrap a gift and put it under the tree

Have a Christmas music dance party

Make cards for your teachers

Medium effort:

Go to the library and check out Christmas books

Pick out a new ornament for the tree

Go out to eat for dinner

Invite aunt/uncle/grandparent over for dinner

Take a family walk with your pet

Read bedtime books by the fire

Pick out a gift for your adopted family

Make your own pizzas for dinner

How to Create an Easy & Fun Christmas Countdown

Coolest-parents-ever award:

Visit Santa

Visit the penguins and polar bear at the zoo

Do the Holiday Luminary Walk

Visit the Holiday Lights on Farmstead Lane (Deanna Rose)

Bake Christmas cookies

Visit Crown Center

Build a Gingerbread House

Visit KC’s most over-the-top lighting displays

Do a carriage ride on the plaza

Go ice skating

I promise, it’s easy and fun. And your kids will just love it. But if I still haven’t sold you, here’s a Pro Tip: Trader Joe’s has the best deal on the chocolate calendar countdowns for just 99 cents.
