Tips for Cooking With Kids & Recipe Ideas
Hey Kansas City! Do you know that Wednesday, September 13th, is National Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day? We want to encourage all of your kids and teens to take over their kitchen and prepare a meal or meals for your family to celebrate the day. When kids cook with their parents or guardians, they are strengthening a family bond and making memories that will last. But not only that, they are also learning life skills and also where their food comes from and how to make healthier choices.
My kids love to make breakfast in the morning, and while it can be dangerous in the kitchen, I have a few tips that will keep everyone safe! This way, your kiddos can make a great breakfast, lunch or dinner without the fear of cuts and burns.
-Keep it cool- Have supplies for them to make cold breakfast items ie yogurt, fruit, granola, cereals, smoothie mixes and so on.
-Mix it up- To avoid cuts, have your kiddos do the “dirty work”. Let them mix up the ingredients in the bowls, crack the eggs, roll out dough or if it is something soft enough, use plastic knives or kid knives to avoid sharp ones.
-Do the math- In our house, anytime we can throw in a math problem we do lol. So when making biscuits or pancakes or anything really that needs to be measured out, I let the kids do the measuring.
-Spread it out- Sandwiches are easy to make too! All they really have to do is spread out the pb&j or spread the mayo and mustard, add some turkey, cheese and whatever else and you are done!
As always, younger kids should always be supervised when in the kitchen! Especially if they are using the stove, oven, knives or toaster!
Here are a few easy recipes that my kids always help with, and you can guarantee that I will be finding a way to incorporate all these easy ones together so I can take full advantage of this day lol

3 Cups of Flour
41/2 tsp baking powder
9 tbsp oil
1 Cup water
11/2 tsp salt
This recipe really is easy and tastes great! I personally add a little butter on the tops before baking, my husband loves it!
Kidshealth.org has some really yummy recipes as well! Plus they have recipes that are great for those with dietary restrictions.
The Awesome Apple Sauce has become a staple item in our house!
All you need is:
2 small red apples
2tbsp lemon juice
2 pinches of cinnamon.
