This Weekend at the Box Office: Deepwater Horizon

This Weekend at the Box Office: Deepwater Horizon

Release Date: September 30, 2016
Run Time: 107 min
Rating: PG-13
Director: Peter Burg
Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, Kate Hudson

Deepwater Horizon is a movie about the offshore drilling rig that exploded in 2010 filling the Gulf of Mexico with millions of gallons of oil. Its awesomeness entertains as well as gives audiences a grim view of oil corporations and drilling. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, Kate Hudson, Gina Rodriguez and John Malkovich, this is one hell of a disaster movie.

It follows Mike Williams (Wahlberg) as he leaves his family to go out to the rig where they are behind schedule and bogged down in complications. As he and Mr. Jimmy (Transocean’s Installation Manager- played expertly by Kurt Russell) try to keep things safe on the rig, BP executives constantly push to begin drilling. John Malkovich plays his role as the top BP man there to perfection.

There’s not a lot to spoil here, as we all know about this spill- the largest man-made disaster in history. It is incredible to see though. Explosion after explosion, this movie had me nervously biting my nails and jumping out of my seat throughout. I was moved by the heroics of these people, as they were trust into a living nightmare. The film does a good job of recognizing those true men and women who risked and gave their lives to help others.

I haven’t liked a disaster movie this much since Armageddon, although this felt much more somber to me. Acting, effects, storyline- this has it all (baring an Aerosmith rock ballad). There is a lot of information to digest, as the film tries to help the average theatergoer understand the mechanics of what exactly happened. However, whether you understand it all or not, the movie is incredible. It is out this weekend, September 30.

Experience Fall Fun at Worlds of Fun!

Good Morning, Kansas City! Worlds of Fun is a staple in the Kansas City, and has been offering family fun for decades. Our Mom Squad Ambassador, Erin, took the kiddos to check it out and shares some fun upcoming fall events–including FREE Pre-K Season Pass. Don’t miss out!

Experience Fall Fun at Worlds of Fun!

Experience Fall Fun at Worlds of Fun!

One of my favorite childhood memories is when my dad would load us up in the truck and we’d spend the day at Worlds of Fun! If you’re from KC, unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know that Worlds of Fun is an amusement park with tons of cool rides and family fun! It keeps expanding every year to become even bigger and better! Somehow after all this time, the smells, sights and sounds of WOF have remained pretty much the same: funnel cakes, fresh blacktop, laughing and screaming voices! I’ve been going to WOF since I was about 5 and now I am so excited to create new memories with my own kids!

Experience Fall Fun at Worlds of Fun!

There are some really exciting things happening at WOF in the coming year! I wanted to share a few things that you may not know about!

  • First of all, WOF is offering a special FREE Pre-K season pass for the entire 2017 season for children 3-5 years old. This saves big $$$ because the regular season passes cost anywhere from $100-150! You can register online starting now.   You will need to show the child’s birth certificate when you come to the park to process the pass. If you process the pass between October 1st and October 30th, 2016, your child will receive one FREE visit in 2016! Find out more and register for the pass at https://www.worldsoffun.com/what-s-new/pre-k-pass

  • In my opinion season passes are definitely the way to go in 2017! For just $99, or 9 payments of $11 each with the EZ pay plan, the Gold season pass has so many benefits! Unlimited visits to Worlds and Oceans of Fun, FREE parking, FREE admission to Dinosaurs Alive exhibit, special dollar days with discounted food/games/merchandise throughout the season, bring a friend discount days, and early park access days. With the Gold season pass, you also will receive a free visit in 2016 so you can enjoy Halloween Haunt or The Great Pumpkin Fest!

  • Starting September 17th, 2016, you can get your scare on at Halloween Haunt or during the day kiddos under 14 can enjoy tons of fun activities at The Great Pumpkin Fest. https://www.worldsoffun.com/the-great-pumpkin-fest/things-to-do

  • Two new rides are opening in 2017 as well. Mustang Runner and Falcon’s Flight. They look awesome and I can’t wait to try them out! Check them out at https://www.worldsoffun.com/what-s-new/new-in-2017

  • Another reason I was personally sold on buying season passes, especially this year, is because for the first time in WOF history, starting in 2017, the park will be open until December! They are starting something called Winterfest with all kinds of winter activities: light displays, ice skating, holiday characters, and live entertainment. We’ll have to stay tuned to see what rides are available to ride in the colder temps!

Explore and Enjoy Johnson Farms for Pumpkins, Decor, and Fun!

Happy Monday, Kansas City! Hopefully, everyone had a great weekend, and if you’re already looking forward to next weekend — consider checking out Johnson Farms. It’s located in Belton, MO, has u-pick veggies, a petting zoo, and plenty more for the whole family. Check out our Mom Squad Ambassador’s review of the beloved pumpkin patch for the low down on all the fall fun.

Explore and Enjoy Johnson Farms for Pumpkins, Decor, and Fun!

Today I, and some of our kids club members, got a sneak peak of Johnson Farms before they open to the public this Saturday. Johnson Farms is in Belton, MO and it is a one-stop shop for fall fun. Expect to spend the day when you come out, because there is so much to do!

Explore and Enjoy Johnson Farms for Pumpkins, Decor, and Fun!

They have a 20-acre corn maze, train and tractor rides, u-pick vegetables and flowers, a petting zoo, playgrounds, a sand bus (yep) and concessions. I honestly couldn’t list everything. What I really like about this place compared to other pumpkin patches is the range of activities. There’s something for everyone and every age. There are awesome designated preschool areas with an easier maze and swings for babes. We all know how annoying it is when your kids are small and you shell out a ton of money to go to a pumpkin patch were there is maybe one or two things for them to do. You will not have that problem here!

Explore and Enjoy Johnson Farms for Pumpkins, Decor, and Fun!

We didn’t get to pick pumpkins on our outing. The mud was still drying out- but should be good for Saturday. They have very nifty wheel-barrels, which is enough to lure me here. Who wants to carry a forty-pound pumpkin around? We did get to pick vegetables and they had a lot of variety. We picked our first eggplant and the biggest cabbages I’d ever seen.

We got lovely bouquets of sunflowers and zinnias. We also tried pumpkin donuts, which were a hit with everyone. Plenty of slides and rides kept all the kids there busy and despite it being a HOT day, none of them wanted to leave. If you have a bit of a shopper on your hands (me- I am the shopper) there is a lovely shop with décor and plants to decorate for the fall.

Explore and Enjoy Johnson Farms for Pumpkins, Decor, and Fun!

If you have one day to devote to pumpkin picking- Johnson Farms is when you should go. There are a lot of options this time of year and I know everyone has their favorite or local pumpkin patch. I really think you should make Johnson Farms yours. It was easy to find, easy to navigate, and a ton of entertainment.

If you haven’t yet joined iFamilyKC’s Kids Club- quit missing all the fun and join us!

This Weekend at the Box Office: The Magnificent Seven

Happy Weekend, Kansas City! The classic, Magnificent Seven, is getting a reboot with Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, and our Mom Squad Ambassador, Darcy, got a sneak peek. Check out her review of the new take on an old favorite. Take a look!

This Weekend at the Box Office: The Magnificent Seven

This Weekend at the Box Office: The Magnificent Seven

Release Date: September 23, 2016
Run Time: 2 hr 12 min
Rating: PG-13
Director: Antoine Fuqua
Cast: Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt

I knew that people would be excited about this film. Audiences have been barraged with military movies and then sci-fi/action movies and most recently superhero movies. The classic, grandpa-associated westerns seem somewhat novel again with True Grit and other cowboy films coming out.

That being said, a star-studded remake of one of my father’s favorite films didn’t leave me with high expectations. I love the cast and the basic storyline (seven loner sharp-shooters band together to save a town from a villainous gold-hoarding psychopath), but I really hoped I could see this film and tell my dad it was great and he would enjoy it. I didn’t know if that was possible.

When I went to the theater it was PACKED! People were dying to see this movie and again I thought, with all this hype- how can it not be disappointing. Happily though, this film saw my low expectations and high hopes and it addressed them and blew me away. This is one of the best films I have seen in awhile. And a cowboy film at that!

The actors were fantastic. The director was fantastic. He clearly knew he had amazing talent, and he let them do their thing. Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, and Chris Pratt lead this cast, but are by no means the only talent. Each actor- even some unknown to me- got some spotlight. The movie was funny, well rounded, action PACKED and drama filled. The actors seemed to be enjoying the film (which I know shooting this was tough) and it bled through to the audience.

I had seen reviews that called the film “gory” which I am happy to disagree with. There were a couple cringe-worthy scenes and obviously a LOT of shooting and killing, but there was not excessive, or unnecessary blood. My husband remarked later that there was no nudity, nor could we recall any cursing. The film does have a PG-13 rating.

I have two kind-of complaints about the movie and they are: 1. It is a long movie. 2 hours and twelve minutes long. There was like a 90 second stare-down with an increasingly annoying whistle. But overall, it all felt right and it felt worthwhile. And 2. This film is going to be popular. It will be in IMAX for seven days only and I expect it will be filling up theaters well over opening weekend. Reserve a seat or expect to show up early to get seats. But it will be absolutely worth it.

5 Ways to Encourage Children to Read at Home

Hello, Kansas City! With the school year back in full swing, any parent knows the importance of reading. Reading begins a lifelong relationship between kids and learning, and is the foundation of success. Our Mom Squad Ambassador lays out 5 simple ways to encourage children to read at home. Start early and the benefits will reap for years to come. Check it out!

5 Ways to Encourage Children to Read at Home

5 Ways to Encourage Children to Read at Home

Reading is probably the single most important thing a child can learn. Opportunity knocks when I child has mastered reading. So, what are some ways you can encourage reading in your home? Check out these tips and feel free comment with your own suggestions!

  • Make reading fun

Go to the library and get your child their very own library card. This is a huge deal for kids and they will love it! Let your child choose books at their reading level and ones they are interested in. Kids will be more likely to read if the book is something they like.

  • Read together

A few times a week before bed my kids and I gather up a few books and pile in my bed for some reading time. I recently started reading some small chapter books like Charlotte’s Web and The BFG to the kids.

  • Set the example

I love diving in to a good book! You show your kids how much fun and exciting reading can be by reading yourself.

  • Rinse and Repeat

Well maybe not rinse but definitely REPEAT. Kids love to read the same books over and over again. Repetition is important because they memorize the words in the book and can eventually master putting the sounds together to form words.

  • Start early

This may sound crazy but I started reading to my children when they were in the womb. I would read my books aloud instead of silently. If you have the opportunity, take your kids to storytime at the library. MCPL offers storytime from birth to school age and also a family storytime. We started taking my daughter to storytime around 6 months old.

Organize Your Family Chaos with this Simple & Cheap Calendar!

Helllooooo, Kansas City! I don’t know about you all, but I am ALWAYS looking for easy (and cheap) ways to get organized. Our Mom Squad Ambassador, Darcy, has a fantastic calendar that has helped her reign in the chaos of every day life. Check it out!

Organize Your Family Chaos with this Simple & Cheap Calendar!

Organize Your Family Chaos with this
Simple & Cheap Calendar!

Fall is always a time of change. School is back, sports are in full swing, the holidays are on the horizon and wardrobes need to be adjusted. I don’t know about you, but it seems to take me awhile to get used to my family’s new schedule. Having young ones in the house makes it a bit tougher. My kids are too little to read a calendar, and anyway their sense of time isn’t the best. (My littlest says everything, from her latest nap to her last birthday, happened “yesteryear”.)

Around the time I was getting dizzy explaining when gymnastics was (tomorrow’s tomorrow’s tomorrow) our French teacher gifted the girls with a train depicting the days on the week. (Merci, Madame Zoé.) It was large, with each car the size of a sheet of paper, and the kids and I dutifully colored it and hung it on the wall. Staring at it, inspiration hit and I decided it could help me keep the kids (and me) aware of our schedule.

Organize Your Family Chaos with this Simple & Cheap Calendar!

I went online and found free clip art that worked for our activities. We had a girl with a backpack for school days, girls doing gymnastics, an Eiffel Tower for French class and we even found an elderly couple for when grandparents were coming to visit. (Not that you are in any way elderly Mom and Dad!) I also printed of a sun, which symbolized ‘today’.

Organize Your Family Chaos with this Simple & Cheap Calendar!

Every morning my kids move the sun and they can see what they have going on. If they want to know how far away something is, they can count the train cars. It has worked out AMAZINGLY for us. Granted, it only represents a week, but my kids don’t really understand more than that.

Organize Your Family Chaos with this Simple & Cheap Calendar!

The best thing about this is it is FREE and totally customizable. Do a theme, size and activities that work for you. We keep our spare clip art in an envelope and I update the train as needed. Also, now that my eldest is learning to read, we have labeled some things, to help her learn. What do you think? Could this help in your home?
